Painter Rita Sonkodi earned this ministerial recognition through her artistic and pedagogical work, which she received on January 22, 2026.

November 10, 2025. The exhibition pays tribute to the exceptional historical role and enduring intellectual legacy of Count Kuno Klebelsberg, the former Minister of Religion and Education. The uniqueness of the display lies in the way Rita Sonkodi invokes this unparalleled life path through the toolkit of fine arts and creative sensitivity, while also revealing the intimate, profound world of Kuno Klebelsberg and his wife, Sarolta, which has remained partially hidden from the public eye.

Rita Sonkodi, painter and assistant professor, was awarded the prestigious Ferenc Pálfy Prize on March 14, 2025, at the Pick Arena in Szeged. The award recognizes the artist's exemplary community involvement and her work in creating cultural value. The accolade was established by Member of Parliament Béla Mihálffy, named in honor of the city's former mayor.

As a side event of the conference titled "Departing with Dignity – End-of-Life Care in Csongrád-Csanád County," Rita Sonkodi’s exhibition is currently on display at the SZTE Ilona Banga Health Sciences Training Centre. She describes her show as a confession with a brush in hand. The lines of her graphic works help her experience and survive the personal stories of death and loss in her own life; through these images, she pays tribute to the memory of her mother. "I live as I paint, and I paint what I experience," she says. A defining encounter in her life was discovering the personality and works of Alaine Polcz. Her commitment to living with dignity and accompanying the natural process of death is also evident in her altarpiece of Mother Teresa. To this day, the lives and actions of these two women serve as role models and inspirations in her art. This is further reinforced by her doctoral dissertation, which draws from the "cultural history of the death mask."

An exhibition featuring 100 works by 76 artists has opened at the Szeged Cathedral Visitor Centre to honor the Himnusz by Ferenc Kölcsey and Ferenc Erkel. This collection is a traveling exhibition and will visit several major Hungarian cities. The show in Szeged, which includes one of my own paintings, is on display from March 13 to May 26, 2024.

Rita Sonkodi’s retrospective exhibition, titled "My Stories" (Történeteim), opened on December 14, 2023, in Szeged’s most beautiful gallery space at 1 Takaréktár Street. The painter’s very first exhibition debuted 25 years ago, and as Klára Szeberényi, the host of the evening, remarked at the opening: "Looking at Rita, one would think she must have been only about ten years old back then..." That first solo exhibition took place three decades ago, just one street away from the current venue. As the artist recounted in her opening speech, the weather that day was so treacherous that the art historian traveling from Budapest only made it as far as Kecskemét by car due to a blizzard. Stuck there, they had to go into a local museum to "fax" the text of the opening speech to Szeged. Ultimately, the then-director of the Móra Ferenc Museum read the adventurously delivered text to an audience who had all arrived looking as though they were seeking refuge in a mountain shelter. However, the stormy atmosphere quickly vanished when, at the start of the ceremony, the artist’s young daughter, Lili, saw her mother standing alone before the large crowd. She ran out and clung to her mother's leg throughout the entire speech so she wouldn't have to be alone. Naturally, it has been a long journey from that first show to this retrospective collection. As the artist noted, this exhibition marks the conclusion of a life chapter that spans multiple artistic periods. With the loss of her mother—the most devoted admirer of her art—the entire family begins a new era. Her mother now watches the opening from above, surely rejoicing in the artist's success.

My permanent exhibition opened on August 17, 2021, at 5:00 PM in the Korona Hotel (Ground Floor, Korona Conference Centre), which serves as the Makó station of the pilgrimage route titled "The Way of Pearls" (Igazgyöngyök útja). My Mary series, inspired by the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke's cycle "The Life of Mary" (Das Marien-Leben), is housed within the renovated Korona Hotel building. At the opening ceremony, actress Eszter Nagy-Kálózy recited excerpts from the poem cycle, and folk singer Mária Petrás also performed. The exhibition was officially opened by Mayor Éva Erzsébet Farkas.
