Confession with a Brush in Hand
As a side event of the conference titled "Departing with Dignity – End-of-Life Care in Csongrád-Csanád County," Rita Sonkodi’s exhibition is currently on display at the SZTE Ilona Banga Health Sciences Training Centre. She describes her show as a confession with a brush in hand. The lines of her graphic works help her experience and survive the personal stories of death and loss in her own life; through these images, she pays tribute to the memory of her mother. "I live as I paint, and I paint what I experience," she says. A defining encounter in her life was discovering the personality and works of Alaine Polcz. Her commitment to living with dignity and accompanying the natural process of death is also evident in her altarpiece of Mother Teresa. To this day, the lives and actions of these two women serve as role models and inspirations in her art. This is further reinforced by her doctoral dissertation, which draws from the "cultural history of the death mask."
